Four knowledge-driven panel discussions
Panel 1
TECHNOLOGY TRENDS – “Transition to E-Mobility enabled by Advanced Battery Technologies
The transition to e-mobility, powered by advanced battery technologies, is set to be dominated by Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry for the foreseeable future. However, to fully realize this shift, we need comprehensive schemes and policies focusing on four key areas: enhancing the volumetric energy of LFP batteries, refining pack, and system design, scaling up manufacturing capabilities, and securing a robust supply chain. Central to this effort is the localization of all components to reduce dependence on raw material imports, along with the development of prototypes that offer higher energy density. Additionally, emerging short-term technologies need to be explored to accelerate this transition.
Panel 2
India as a Global Manufacturing Hub of Opportunities and Challenges
India is on the path to becoming a global manufacturing hub for advanced battery technologies and the journey comes with more opportunities than challenges. Infrastructure remains a significant challenge, yet there are substantial opportunities, particularly in recycling and developing local technology tools, which could help reduce costs. Battery swapping is another promising area for India to explore. To succeed, India must focus on vertical integration within the cell ecosystem, investing in R&D, and optimizing battery chemistry. Emphasizing technology enhancement, circularity, and scalability will be essential. Start-ups will play a pivotal role, in collaborations with established players helping streamline the demand and supply chain while enhancing the manufacturing ecosystem. By focusing on these areas, India can position itself advantageously on the global stage.
Panel 3
Battery Value Chain & Cell Ecosystem Readiness until 2030
To prepare India’s battery value chain and cell ecosystem for 2030, there must be a focus on investment and scaling. Zinc-based chemistries will help with the ecosystem, and waste management represents a significant industry opportunity. Localization of production is crucial, with an emphasis on "local for locals," which requires training a skilled workforce to become self-reliant and compliant. This approach will enable India to emerge as both a manufacturer and an exporter. Moreover, AI technology will be vital in simulating processes and conducting second-life evaluations of materials, ensuring optimal quality and grade.
Panel 4
Investing into Future - Funding Giga Factories and Battery Value Chain
To secure the future of India's battery value chain and giga factories, it is crucial to focus on the fundamentals of pricing and policy. The Indian ecosystem's growth depends on capital investment, collaboration and building capabilities. Circular integration strategies, such as timely market entry and investment, are essential. Coordination among suppliers, customers, investors, leaders, government, and global stakeholders is vital for globalization efforts. As the global battery manufacturing landscape evolves, the focus should be on applying capital to the right sectors and technologies, with private equity. 2024 to 2030, is a period seen as promising for long-term market growth in electrification
